João III (7 June 1502 – 11 June 1557), also known as João the Pious, was King of Portugal from 13 December 1521 to his death. He is remembered for his work in securing a monopoly on cloves and nutmeg (thus, earning him the nickname "the Grocer King"), and extending Portuguese possessions to Asia and the New World through the colonization of Brazil. He leads the Portuguese in Civilization VI.
